"He lived a lifetime of I'm sorry's." Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul documentary

LIVE Conversation from the Crossroads with Bob Beatty and John Lynskey, Resident Historian, Big House Museum

I saw Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul this week. It was a moving, pretty much unflinching look at Gregg as not just an artist, but as a human. The title of this post, “He lived a lifetime of I’m sorry’s,” is from Gregg’s son Devon.

That sentiment is so spot-on. It’s reflected in Gregg’s change to the final words in Jackson Browne’s “These Days”—“Please don’t confront me with my failures, I’m aware of them.” Browne’s lyric was “I’ve not forgotten them” and he admitted in the movie he now sings Gregg’s version.

Right after leaving the movie, I reached out to John Lynskey to schedule a conversation. Y’all know John from his work with the Allman Brothers. He’s written books, liner notes, was publisher of Hittin’ the Note, and also a major contributor to the new documentary about Gregg.1

Details below. If you can’t make it, I will record and post this to the Conversation from the Crossroads podcast feed.

LAGNIAPPE

Last week, I posted about the return of “Mountain Jam” to the ABB repertoire in November 1993.2 Dickey had refused to play it for many years, and it was a concession upon returning to the band after a hiatus.

Here is one of the shows he missed, with Jimmy Herring—then of Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, now with Widespread Panic—subbing for Dickey. He filled the same role in summer 2000 after the band’s bitter divorce with Betts.

Brought to you by the paid members of the Long Live the ABB community.
