I have to write what is obvious to most, the original release is quite easily the greatest live recording ever. I was not lucky enough to be there, but I have almost the equivalent and I can listen to it to my heart's content.
That was 100% the intent of At Fillmore East...that if you couldn't be there, here was the next best thing. And it worked, the album was a massive success, something we're still talking about 54 years after it was released.
Great article. As a matter of fact I know the guy who yelled “play all night”. He’s the cousin of a close friend I know for 60 years. He was also at that show and there was a bomb scare so they had to evacuate the theatre and by the time the concert was over it was dawn outside as they exited. Fabulous album. Had a neighbor, budding guitarist, who’d stand in his driveway, this blaring off record player, playing along
not sure I’d enjoy that as a neighbor but I appreciate the spirit for sure.
